Jump Terminology

Coyote Time

"Coyote time" refers to a game design technique where a player is given a brief window of time (usually a few frames) to still successfully complete a jump even after walking off a platform's edge. The term comes from Wile E. Coyote cartoons, where the character briefly hovers in mid-air before falling. This technique helps make platforming gameplay feel more forgiving and natural, despite being physically unrealistic. It's particularly common in 2D platformer games.

For example, in a game like Super Mario Bros., you can still jump for a fraction of a second after running off a ledge, making the controls feel more responsive and reducing player frustration.

Jump Buffer

Jump buffer (a specific use of input buffering) is a game design feature that allows players to press the jump button slightly before landing and still execute a jump immediately upon touching the ground. This creates more responsive controls by storing the jump input for a brief period, making precise platforming sequences feel smoother and more natural.
